When I started writing this blog, it wasn’t called Young, Scrappy, and Always Hungry. I honestly can’t even remember its original name because it was so short-lived. I think it was something along the lines of Letters from Amanda or something like that.
Last year, when I started writing again, I knew I wanted to change the name of my blog. I have never been good at coming up with titles, and at the time, Hamilton was my latest obsession. Everything I said and thought was somehow turned into something related to the musical phenomenon. So when I was thinking up of titles, I was spoofing a lot of Hamilton things. None of it was to make fun of the show; it was more like making fun of myself for being so into the show.
I don’t really remember when or how it came to thought, but I think I was listening to the soundtrack for the thousandth time when I hear the lyrics:
I’m just like my country / I’m young, scrappy, and hungry / and I’m not throwing away my shot.
And then I most likely laughed and thought about how that kind of applied to me:
- I was twenty-one years old. I was young.
- I was all over the place. I was scrappy.
- And I was hungry at the time…because I’m always hungry.
It’s not that I’m always just physically hungry, but I always want more. More things to learn, more things to do, more opportunities in life. The hunger does run deeper than food.
(But I was going down the food route when it came down to the title. I am always hungry.)
So just as I realized how perfect that was for me, I decided to use it as the name of my blog. Just the fact that it had something to do with a musical—specifically Hamilton—made it perfect for me, but also the underlying message of the lyrics made it that much more perfect. And I feel like most people think of themselves as young, scrappy, and hungry, so I thought it was relatable.
And people like relatable.
In my opinion, I think my blog’s name is perfect. I love it. It represents me well, and I think that it tells the world how I identify myself. I know I’m not perfect, but I have some time to do what I can to better myself, and feed that hunger that I have. (Speaking of hunger, it’s just about lunch time. I have to go re-boost my energy.)
Happy Hump Day, all!
