Personally, I like having writing prompts. They definitely help me get started. They don’t stop me from using creativity, although I do sometimes find them a little limiting.
I don’t necessarily follow one specific list of prompts. Actually, I use a bunch of different sources to tell me what I should write. I write only what I want to share.
Which, if I’m going to be honest, isn’t much less than what I think. I’ve said it before, but I don’t really omit information; I don’t try to be too sneaky. Although I definitely think that I overshare sometimes. Which can be a problem, in my opinion.
Prompts also keep me writing; I did them on purpose, mostly to keep my mind turning away from darker thoughts. And to clear my head. And to have my memories and thoughts down in writing (typing?) for later on—I would like to have everything down now just in case I fall hard enough to give myself memory loss, or just if my already horrible memory worsens. Part of the reason for writing on here is one of those Just In Case kind of things. Believe it or not.
I’m not a big fan of forgetting.
Not anybody can just come up with words on their own, but writing prompts can get your head turning and mind working. It definitely helps me, so yeah, I like them.
Prompt: Are writing prompts a useful exercise, or do you find them to be too limiting and/or hokey?
